New Single: "Mooncloud" :: New Forms
“Mooncloud” - Br. Lydian
Single Release: “Mooncloud”
Time slips differently now. “Mooncloud” is a walk in my neighborhood stretched and warped: crickets, full moon, cloudy night, fauns clustered in yards. The low hum of the highway, quieter.
On this May Day, 100% of Bandcamp proceeds for “Mooncloud” will be donated to the Athens Mutual Aid Network. They support our community by providing rent, bill, and loan aid, sanitation supplies, prescription pickup, food pickup, and family sponsorship. For help, visit tiny.cc/reliefathens or call (844) 423-6886 and press “1.”

New Forms of Movement
Our current social forms obligate workers:
to submit to the automation and outsourcing of labor without reducing work hours, strengthening the social safety net, or ensuring basic human needs are met
(see: Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber);
to “innovate” healthcare not to cure the sick, but to monetize the treatment
(see: Health, Healthcare, and Capitalism by Colin Leys, pp. 7-23);
to “innovate” education not to build democracy, but to compel obedience
(see: Education under Fire by Bill Ayers and Rick Ayers);
to equate “freedom” with submission to social rule by market imperatives
(see: The Origins of Capitalism by Ellen Meiksins Wood);
to accept violently enforced scarcities as “natural”
(see: The Pandemic is a Portal by Arundhati Roy).
I’m grateful to this webinar series hosted by Kevin Kumashiro that gathers scholars transforming education through collective labor struggles.
It is time to build new forms.
May Day Actions
Thanks to my union, the United Campus Workers of Georgia, for promoting these local worker actions:
Atlanta: May Day Protest and Parade at 12pm: Event
Athens: Car Caravan Protest hosted by Dignidad Inmigrante en Athens, 5pm: Event
General Strike
Solidarity to the workers in the May Day general strike today. To support these workers’ demands, refrain from making purchases from Amazon, Instacart, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target, and FedEx on May 1.
SF Gate: “Employees at Whole Foods, Amazon and more plan strike, demand better protections”
The Intercept: “As Amazon, Walmart, and Others Profit Amid Coronavirus Crisis, Their Essential Workers Plan Unprecedented Strike”
The freedom to choose between high-risk work and starvation is not freedom, but systemic compulsion. Solidarity forever.
